My first weeks on tamoxifen

Breast Cancer

Woven from the experiences of 355 women. Patient-reported, not medical guidance.

Tamoxifen is a pill, taken alone, at home, every day, for years. Women describe underestimating it because of what it is not — it is not chemo, not infusions, not the hardest part. But the side effects are significant and often not described upfront. Women also describe a specific emotional texture: gratitude that the worst is over, alongside a strange grief at still being, in some sense, in treatment.

In their words

Composite quotes, representative of many women, not verbatim.

I thought tamoxifen would be the easy part. The pill you take after the hard stuff. It's not easy. Nobody warned me how much of a daily presence it would be.
