Women describe this as one of the hardest conversations of the entire experience. How they navigated it depended on the age of their children. Women with very young children describe choosing simple language and focusing on what would stay the same. Women with teenagers describe the conversation going unexpectedly sideways. Women with adult children describe a role-reversal — the child wanting to help and not knowing how, the mother managing their fear alongside her own. In almost every account, the hardest part was not the telling. It was the maintenance afterward.
